A turning center is a modern style of metal lathe. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Controlled, and shows that this type of lathe can be programmed and set by computer.
What is a CNC turning center used for?
A CNC turning center is a machine used to precisely shape metal. They use cutting tools to carve a rotating piece of metal to the shape required. The machine uses tool bits and drill bits to shape the metal. Both horizontal and vertical turning center machines are available.
What is the structure of a turning center?
Put simply, the machine consists of a rotating spindle which holds the metal to be shaped, a motor which turns the metal at a constant speed to ensure accuracy, and a variety of cutting tools which are held in place by the turret. Unlike old style metal lathes, which needed to be set up and operated manually, CNC turning centers are computer controlled. This means that the machinery also includes a computer interface.
